ABOUT 《VIP》
VIP是“海杰”工作室开放的一个邀请项目，很多人去工作室参观，由于我的工作方式决定了我的工作室比较空，我希望为来访者提供另一种观看方式。我联系一位司机去接来参观的人，来访者必须预约，不预约不予接待。司机接到来访者后按我设定好的行车路线和速度进行行驶，途经贫民区，建设区，城乡结合部，繁华闹市，地下车库，高速公路，在参与者不知情的状况下送去火葬场的行程。
每分每秒每一次路过都是自己的VIP。最终一天都会被送到火葬场，在偶然的一天也可以到终点看看。
VIP was part of the “Haijie” Open Studio project in Beijing. Since I didn't have anything in particular to show them in my sutio, I thought about making my audience experience my work directly. But only people who made an appointment -according to their own free time- would get a chance to see my work. A taxi driver would pick them up at a pre-determined place in town. Their trip would then start and last approximately one hour during which they would drive through different parts of town (outskirts of Beijing, shanty towns, construction sites, CBD district, bustling downtown, underground parking lots, the highway) and then bring them to a crematorium on the eastern side of Beijing.
Every one of the 78 visitors who came for this “Open Studio”event reacted differently to their one hour trip. Some were supportive, some got angry, some refused to get in the taxi, some wouldn’t pay the driver, some didn’t show up, some slammed the door of the car, some slept by, some insulted me, some stopped the car and left, some quarreled with the driver thinking he was a fluke….
We are all our own “VIP’s” and maybe we should all go to the crematorium at least once in our life to contemplate our own final moment on earth.
